Maybe we ought to create a name for ourselves, you know, like how Star Trek fans are 'Trekkies' (does that 'date' me?). How about 'Webbies' (now I'm picturing Google with its webfeet), or Kinzies, or....? Any ideas?

Just to remind you that we decided not to do a wait list for the Holiday limited edition Webkinz Reindeer at The Funky Little Shop. Instead, we are drawing 36 names from the slips filled out by our wonderful regular customers who come to Funky in The Kids Market in Vancouver to buy their Webkinz. You can fill in one slip for every Webkinz that you buy until December 01/07. The first 35 drawn will get called and their Reindeer will be put aside for them to buy. As I put away the last of my Christmas ornaments, I muse that life is full of celebrations. I spied my old box of Valentine's and am reminded that the "celebration of love" is less than a month away! Oh boy, another excuse to eat chocolates! So much for the diet I started last
week read on...

Free Mini Images for Lockets

However, a decidedly less caloric treat might be a locket. I've looked
far and wide for the nicest lockets as I've thought about carrying
them... but I think I'll focus on what we do best. Therefore, from now
till Valentine's Day, we will gladly size any image you email to me to
3/4 inch by 3/4 inch for you to insert into your lockets. We will
print up to four different mini images for everyone - just send us an
email with the image. You will need to pick them up at our studio on
Granville Island or alternatively, please send us a stamped self
addressed envelope and we'll get your mini image out to you via the
mail.

Looking for a Locket?

If you are looking for a locket, I only found one local store with
them, Birks (birks.com) - they only have two choices, a sterling silver
one for $155 and a diamond crusted 18K white gold one for $3,500!!!
And nothing in between! I checked out everyone from hbc.com, sears.ca,
peoplesjewellers.com, ragnar.ca, and even Tiffany.com without any luck.

However, I did find some online and I've ensured that they will ship to Canada.

For brand name and high fashion, I found a very stylish locket on
Amazon.com by Juicy Couture for $95 USD! Search for: jewelry juicy
couture locket

A nice selection of mid-priced lockets starting at just over $40 CDN
for sterling silver can be found here: Elite Jewels out of Ontario. Be
sure to click on lockets from the top menu and click on the Canadian
flag for Canadian currency. Most of their lockets are in the $50 to
$150 dollar range for sterling silver and 10K yellow or white gold
designs. They have everything from classic styles to simple plain
ones to contemporary square shaped lockets too.

For something a little different, check out, Pictures on Gold, they
laser etch the images onto the locket so the image is waterproof!

Pictures on Gold offers a greater range of lockets and all sorts of
other items that can be laser etched - from cuff links to key chains
and charms! The prices for most is about $150 to $200 USD plus
another $70 USD to etch two images.

Photo Tips/Product Review Section on Website

We will soon add a new section to our website - photography tips and
product reviews. Our first review will be on photo books - these are a
wonderful concept! It is now possible to easily create professional
hard cover books with your photographs, to add stories and captions
that will remind you of all the small and big events in your life. Let
your imagination loose... create books to record special occasions,
vacations, or the year in review. Photo books are a beautiful way to
display and share your life with all your loved ones.

While a number of companies now offer photo books, I reviewed the
following so far and here is a brief overview of each, more information
to come soon:

HP Snapfish - the least expensive hardcover book at $19 for 20 pages,
linen is the only cover option, limited layout colours, need to edit
your images first before starting to create your book

Kodak Gallery - the only one to offer leather (starting at $39 for 20
pages) as an option for the book cover. Their linen and faux leather
starts at $29 for 20 pages) They also offer a Martha Stewart design
option for their photo books, starting at $35 for 20 pages

Photoworks - the most choice for types and style of photo books, also
the only one that lets you crop and edit while creating the book and
their system also "dog ears" the images used which really helps make
the process go faster. They are the only ones to offer a full
hardcover cover while the others use a cut out. Medium sized hardcover
books start at $35 for 20 pages

Have fun creating your books! I’ll have a more comprehensive review on our website in a few weeks.

I know Ganz (the maker of Webkinz) has built an entirely new building just to house the computers and people who look after them so that you will not be disappointed with your Webkinz world. How they are keeping up I can't imagine since kids from all over the world are logging on and playing! And not just the kids. I've been told (whispered to me by somewhat embarrassed adults) that both Moms and Dads have been logging into their kids' accounts and playing the games at work or late in the evening while the kids are in bed. They say it's just to get more points for their kid but I think they just plain old like the games.

The Funky Little Shop has Webkinz "Puppy Love"

Can I still say Happy New Year? Yes! Happy New Year!

Oh no. I made a big mistake. I only ordered 24 of the special Valentine's
release Webkinz, "Puppy Love". When I ordered I had not seen a picture or
example of this addition to the Ganz Webkinz world. Well, Puppy Love
arrived today. We love it.

Puppy Love is not in the regular Webkinz catalogue and won't be available
after this and it is so cute that I know all the Webkinz fans are going to
want one. It looks like a Dalmation but has pretty, little pink and red
hearts instead of black spots over its soft smooth coat. So those of you
lucky enough to wander into The Funky Little Shop over the next little
while, or read this and make the trek here through wind and snow and
freezing cold, will be able to take one of these cute little pups home with
you. I'm going to phone Webkinz at Ganz today and find out if more are
available. Maybe they can come out here with the rest of the Webkinz
arriving next week. Stay tuned to find out who's new in stock as they

Photography Tips for the Holidays: Avoiding Red Eye, Get Closer, and Making Prints

We all bring out our cameras during the holidays… getting together with family and friends is one of the most enjoyable things to do this time of the year. Be sure to capture these times with some great and candid photos of everyone. Here are a few tips to help create better photos:

1. Avoiding red eye in children: Red eye is caused when people look at the flash, the light from the flash hits your retina, which is red from the blood vessels. Now, it is easy to tell adults to not look at the flash… for children, try holding up a small stuffed animal just above the lens or just off to the side (but not too much off to the side) and tell them to look at the toy instead.

2. Get closer for better composition. When taking a group photo, the closer, the better. Try to arrange people into a pyramid formation and get everyone in nice and close. One of the best times to get a group photo is just before dinner is served.

3. If you are using a digital camera, remember to shoot at a medium file size if you would like to print any of the images. Using too small of a file size will result in grainy pictures when you go to print them. You can always easily resize the images to be smaller for emailing or posting to websites.

Yes we have had a new shipment of Webkinz in this week (December 01). I'm
told we have the largest variety of Webkinz in stock in Vancouver! And
there are a few more arriving this coming week: Polar Bear, Panda, Rabbit
and the pink fluffy Webkinz carry purse. (We already have the green purse,

Newest Emily the Strange at The Funky Little Shop

HI Emily fans

We've just finished putting out the latest "Emily the Strange" product. New
purses, wallets, messenger bags and Emily T-shirts (both short and
long-sleeved), as well as watches, shoelaces, patches and more. Oh, and
there are only a few of the fabulous 2007 Emily the Strange calendars left
in stock. You can call us to find out if your favourite Emily item is
available at 604-682-8404. If we have it, we can put it on hold for you or
mail it anywhere you'd like. We don't have an on-line 'shopping site' (yet)
for our store, but if you find something at www.emilystrange.com you can
check with us to see if we have it in stock. Not everything we sell is on
their site though, and some things they have are not available here.

If you're not already familiar with Emily, we call her our little Goth Lite
girl. She's edgy without being nasty, quirky but charming, and knows how to
have serious fun. One of the new t-shirts sums up Emily's philosophy
nicely, "Emily is great for nothing." This is a follow-up to her hugely
successful summer t-shirt "Emily's not lazy, she's just happy doing
nothing."

Did you know that Emily is Australia's second biggest clothing line? And
there are Emily stores in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Germany, Italy, France, England
and Japan? That's because girls from 9 to 99 all have a little bit of Emily
that needs to be expressed.

Kids Market on Granville Island is celebrating it's 22nd birthday on Saturday November 4th. Stop by and enjoy a piece of birthday cake and enter to win a VERY BEARY prize! It all starts at 11:00 am.

Kids Market is a unique boutique style shopping centre for children and their families. Princess Spa makes Granville Islands' Splash event

Princess Spa had its presence in one of the most prestigious charitable events in Granville Island. We donated a very small but meaningful gift certificate to Arts' Umbrellas SPLASH gala event. This event helped us promote our services to those little princess and it also helped build a community within the Granville Island merchants and customers. We will be posting more news on our new blog for the Hairloft. Keep in touch, we will be discussing new trends and styles for kids haircuts for Spring 2007.
